Surf Berbere The Beginnings….
Two schoolmates, James and Tudor, started Surf Berbere after they came out on a week long holiday to Morocco. Just two days into his Morocco surf holiday to Taghazout, James had the opportunity to put down a deposit of a whopping £200 for one of the now “Surf Camp” flats, with the contract stating that he had one month to complete the payment or lose his enormous deposit.
With a bit of begging, pleading and lot of help from friends and family the guys got enough money to get a couple of the flats and what is now the café KR plot as well.
Times where tough in the beginning, the locals didn’t like surf camps, another surf camp had burnt a few of the locals, and the general vibe around town was against any new foreign surf companies. After three years of hard work, numerous local initiatives and plenty of generous donations, the local folk have come to love Surf Berbere.
With peace and harmony aplenty in Taghazout all the guys running the surf camp keep coming back to score the excellent waves and get away from the cold European winters (Maybe to avoid growing up and getting real jobs as well!). So have a quick skim down the page to see the dynamic leaders that make up Morocco’s best loved surf camp!
Party Leader - Tudor
Whilst not the world’s best surfer Tudor is probably the world’s best friend for life. Not a worker, but definitely a gentle lover, he makes life in the surf camp a happy and party like existence! Known for his razor sharp whit and a slight adoration of toilet humour, Tudor is the man in charge of the surf camp café as well as general nighttime entertainment.Don’t expect to see him in the water after his freak yachting accident left his left knee looking like a jelly fish’s spine. A man with a passion for construction and beautiful concrete finishes, Tudor is an ever present at Surf Berbere and one of the founding partners.
The Saffa Attack - Marc
Sparky Marc is the camp manager. Once a vagrant surf traveler hunting down the world’s best waves, Marc stopped in Taghazout early 2010 looking for some heavy barrels, and he hasn’t left. He is the man in charge of the surf camp and making sure that everyone staying with us gets the waves, food and sunshine that they are dreaming of in their surf holidays.Marc hails from South Africa and understands that normal people struggle to understand what he is actually saying, but given his Southern Hemisphere heritage, he is a quality surfer always hungry for waves so if you ever need a dawn session buddy he is the man to ask!
Big Wave Matt - Matty Newman
Matt started his Surf Berbere life as a poorly student looking to learn to surf in time for his Presidency of the Manchester Uni Surf Club. Just in time he managed to get the skills necessary to become a great leader of men and went onto manage the Taghazout surf camp for most of last season. This year Matt is the man in charge of your enquiries, so if you have any questions this is the man to fire them off to before you head out on your surf trip. Why the “faggy”, no real reason, because we can! Not a lover of boys, Matt has been traveling around South America this last summer hunting down Peru’s best kept secrets. He has a free role at the camp when not playing with his computers and has even been known to pull out his guitar for the ladies in the evenings!
Embarak - BSA Surf Coach
Embarak has over ten years of surf coaching experience and has been fully qualified by the BSA. Having worked for Surf Maroc for nearly five years and now with Surf Berbere for over a year, there are few people that know the local Taghazout surf better than him.Probably the nicest, smiliest, prettiest guy you will ever meet, an absolute hero! Guys you will want to be him, girls you will want to be with him!
Momo - BSA Surf Coach
Momo worked for Endo Surf for nearly eight years as a cook and guide and then we stole him! A great leader, lovely guy and wonderful surf coach that has the experience of giving surf lessons to all nationalities. We put him through his BSA assessment last year and hopefully this year he will get his Surfing GB level 2 award.A veritable "when Harry met Sally" moment happened when Lucie our delightful Yogi instructor came out, Momo was a changed man! We don't need to say any more.
Stevo - The Web Guy
Steve "the coolest" web designer ever, hails from team USA and has scoured the globe for the biggest waves to feed his unquenchable appetite for the "extreme". On record for saying that he has "zero coding errors" whilst fist pumping the air, he also knows how to party. An annual visitor to the Surf Berbere Morocco surf camp, Stevo has pulled out some of the greatest fancy dress outfits known to man. The "pokemon" is not a strange sex move, but an all in one piece that fits in every respected surfer's travel bag - This is thanks to the way Steve changed our perceptions!
