Helping Out Our Local Community

We are the only company to have started in the way that we mean to go on and help the local community in every way that we can. We started by employing local staff, then we moved onto helping the local primary schools and now we are permanently on the lookout for new ways to improve the areas that we work in.

We are educating the kids in the schools through our Career Break programs, we renovating and rebuilding local schools through our own labour and funding. We are cleaning the beaches and the villages along the coastline through our beach-cleaning program (a JV with Surf Maroc!). We have even donated towards getting the town sewage problems sorted. We understand that we live in an underdeveloped part of the world and we are trying our hardest to improve the conditions for everyone in our community.

Below are a few of the projects that we have been working on. They are by no means our sole efforts, but it will give you an idea of the commitment and dedication that Surf Berbere are showing to our communities!

Taghazout Primary School

The Taghazout Ecole Primaire is just behind the surf camp. When we started in Taghazout the school didn't even have a set of toilets. Thanks to a £500 contribution from us and a further £300 from the commune we installed four new toilets for the kids to use.

Ikouzza Primary School

As part of our Career Break/Gap Year programs we signed an agreement with the Taghazout Commune that we would help refurbish/develop out all the local schools in the area. This has started with the Ikouzza school (Start Date October 2010), where Surf Berbere pledged 10,000dhs and the Taghazout Commune pledged an equal amount. The core work being undertaken involves building a wall to prevent flash flooding during the Winter. Following the refurbishment of the classrooms work is going to be undertaken to instal water, electricity and the internet.

Imouran Surf Charity

In our first year of operation in Taghazout we helped get the Imouran Surf Association up and running. Many of you will have seen the Devil's Rock Surf School, this is at the very core of the Surf Charity. The goal of the charity is to help under-privileged children learn to surf. With our donation of 20 foam boards and another 30 childrens wetsuits the charity was able to start giving lessons!

Beach Cleanups

Anyone who has visited Morocco will have seen that sewage and waste disposal are huge problems throughout the Kingdom. Taghazout has an acute problem and we are working with the Commune and Surf Maroc to come up with a sustainable solution to the waste and sewage. Poor funding from central government has mean that we have come up with an interim solution of paying for two full time workers to clean the village and the beaches! This has been done as a joint venture with Surf Maroc!
